Please don’t take my word these products are safe for your diet, always read labels to determine if they are free of your allergens. These food items work for my family. When I phone companies to ask about corn ingredients, very many customer service reps are not able to answer my questions and it takes a great deal of time and questions until I feel I am getting the correct answer and I am being understood. One time I even had to contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for assistance.
Substitute Ingredients – Extra
Joy of Baking Ingredient Substitutions and Amount Conversions
Baking Powder Substitute Baking Powder contains corn starch or use
Organic Baking Powder from Bakers Supply House which does not.
Corn Syrup use Rogers Golden (Sugar) Syrup
Egg Replacer – Flax seed meal is very useful to vegans as a
replacement for eggs in baked goods recipes. You can use a water/flax seed meal mixture instead of an egg in recipes, such as pancakes, muffins and cookies.
One-egg substitute formula:
15 mL (1 Tbsp.) Flax seed meal (ground flax seeds)
45 mL (3 Tbsp.) Water
Instructions:
Mix the flax seed meal and water in a small bowl. Let the mixture sit for two
to three minutes to thicken it, before adding it to the recipe.
Flour combinations – Lots of information on this link!
Honey – Use one for one to replace Barley Malt. To replace sugar, use 1/4 cup less liquid for each cup of honey. Substitution source is from Eden Organic Barley Malt. Here is another substitution that may be helpful from The Bread Bible by Rose Levy Beranbaum.
Hot Chocolate – Milo Is our favourite mixture to use because it is healthy. However, it does contain milk and soy ingredients. Check the link for the history of the drink. I have purchased this in the International Section at Canadian Superstore. One glass of 2% milk with 3 tablespoons of Milo contains: 90% Vitamin A, 40% Calcium, and 20% Iron. It is delicious!
Hot Dogs we used President’s Choice Italian Smokies (can’t find link) from Superstore which contain corn syrup. These seem to be safe for Brother Bear so I splurge and let him have fun and so far I haven’t seen any problems.
Macaroni Wheet Noodles, I use Rizopia Rice Pasta which I buy at Quality Foods, Thrifty Foods, Shopper’s Drug Mart
Mayonnaise, Spectrum Canola which I can buy at Thrifty Foods, Quality Foods and Edible Island or here for some more alternatives
Milk – 2 products
KTC PureCreamed Coconut is another excellent product that I found at Superstore in the Ethnic Section. You can’t use this directly in place of other kinds of milk because it is a bit thicker so I still have to add rice milk to get recipes to the right consistency. It does, however, add fat back to your diet and from what I have read online it is good fat. When baking with it, it melts so just add enough rice milk to just barely meet the right consistency, otherwise it will be too runny. It has a very slight sweet taste so I would use it for pancakes and muffins. When you store it in the refrigerator the fat will turn solid and float on top and takes awhile to turn back into a liquid so I just stir it into chunks and measure it out. I hope this makes sense.
Aroy-D Coconut Milk
Contains 55% coconut milk and a brand that we like. The liquid looks nice a smooth and creamy.
Mushrooms – The site recommends eggplant which sounds reasonable to me. I think it would need to be prepped normally to remove the bitterness and then cooked as instructed in the recipe. If anyone tries this, post your feedback in the Comments section below.
Pancake Syrup – Homemade
Powdered Sugar or Icing Sugar
All Powdered Sugar brands, even the organic ones, contain cornstarch. I found this substitution from Corn Allergens and this was their suggestion for powdered sugar. It works beautifully. Add up to a 1 tablespoon of potato starch to 1 cup sugar, and blend in a coffee grinder until it is not grainy. I used to make 1 cup of powdered sugar in my coffee grinder in 3 batches.
Rice Krispies
Crispy Rice, Nature’s Path Organic
Crispy Rice, President’s Choice (contains malt [gluten], peanuts and/or other nuts)
Salami Hungarian Salami from Superstore by Freybe. These are gluten and lactose free. Its been awhile since I contacted the company but these seem to be safe for us to eat too. I picked up a Freybe flyer which stated: No antibiotics; No nitrites; No artificial growth stimulants/promotants; Lactose free; Gluten free; No trans fat
Salt I found this salt substitute while reading about bread and thought I would share it just in case you need to substitute a different kind of salt in a recipe. I cannot verify the amounts will work but it will probably be a good place to start.
Taco Seasoning Mix by Casa Fiesta from Quality Foods or Thrifty Foods
Tahini Paste or Sesame Seed Paste
Worcestershire Sauce – Looking for substitute

The sites below aren’t suited for people with allergies or sensitivities but hopefully they’ll give you some other ideas for substitutions.
